The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) is a research institute, carrying out research based on rigorous analysis, detailed empirical evidence and in-depth institutional knowledge. Our remit covers the national economic and social effects and influences of existing tax, benefit and spending policies and proposed changes in fiscal systems. The institute aims to promote effective economic and social policies by understanding better their impact on individuals, families, businesses and the government's finances and by promoting understanding and discussion of these issues. The institute seeks to communicate its findings effectively, to a wide range of audiences, thereby maximising their impact on policy both directly and by informing public debate.
Founded in 1879 as the Institute of Bankers, the ifs School of Finance is a registered educational charity incorporated by Royal Charter. During the past two decades the ifs has evolved into a 'business school for finance', thus extending its 130-year-old remit to provide the financial services industry with a skilled, effective and competent workforce. The ifs School of Finance is also in the vanguard of promoting a better understanding of finance among consumers in the UK. Its provision includes formal qualifications ranging from financial capability for the 14-19 age group to Masters level, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) through executive education programmes.
